The team of defective drug attorneys at Davis Law Group Car Accident and Personal Injury Lawyers in Seattle are currently investigating possible lawsuits involving people who have been diagnosed with various types of cancer after taking prescription drug Belviq, a diet and weight-loss drug which was approved by the United States Food and Drug Administration in 2012.
Belviq (Lorcaserin) is a popular diet and weight-loss drug developed by Arena Pharmaceuticals and approved by the FDA for consumer use in 2012. Belviq XR was later approved for prescription use in 2016. Both drugs were aimed at targeting long-term weight control, and marketed as easy weight-loss drugs that targeted brain receptors which regulate hunger. The drug was essentially designed to make people feel more full after eating, which could help them to lose weight in the long term.
However, the FDA recently acknowledged an increased risk of cancer in patients who are taking either Belviq or Belviq XR and issued a recall notice in February 2020. The announcement came after the FDA analyzed the results of a double-blind clinical trial showed an increased occurrence of cancer.
In that study, 7.7 percent of patients from trial had later been diagnosed with cancer, a much higher rate than those in the study who had taken a placebo. The FDA concluded that the potential risks associated with Belviq outweigh any potential benefits and formally requested that the manufacturer issue a voluntary recall, which has since been rolled out.
Pancreatic, colorectal, and lung cancers were among the more prevalent forms of cancers found in patients who have been taking Belviq, although there were many patients who did develop other forms of cancer.
Cancer treatments are costly and extremely unpleasant for patients, and pharmaceutical experts contend that the companies responsible for manufacturing and marketing Belviq failed consumers when they prioritized profits over patients’ overall health. Many patients would likely have weighed the pros and cons if they knew there was a risk of cancer as a result of taking Belviq.
The legal team at Davis Law Group Car Accident and Personal Injury Lawyers has provided free case evaluations to injured people in Seattle and across the United States for more than 25 years and can help you better understand if you may be eligible for compensation for your injuries and other damages after taking Belviq.
