Individuals looking to earn extra cash might consider driving for Uber or Lyft, two of the largest rideshare companies in the United States. But just because you have a car and a valid license does not mean that either company will simply allow you to begin offering rides on their platforms. Both Uber and Lyft screen potential drivers to protect their passengers from criminal activity and reduce the likelihood of car accidents that lead to costly insurance claims. And though the requirements for both rideshare services are similar, there are significant differences that should also be acknowledged.
When you apply to work as an Uber driver, the company will check to make sure both you and your vehicle meet its requirements. These requirements are as follows:
Uber will not allow you to carry passengers for a fee on their app unless you are at least 18 years of age and in possession of a valid driver’s license. Drivers younger than 18 (or those with learners’ permits) are not eligible to work with Uber. Additionally, you must have three years of driving experience if you are younger than 25. Otherwise, Uber will require you to have one year of on-the-road experience. As part of the application process, Uber will also perform a check of your criminal records (if applicable) and driving history. The company does so as a means of looking for evidence of crimes that could pose a threat to its drivers or passengers, be they sexual crimes, violent crimes, or offenses like driving under the influence.
Even if you are qualified to drive for Uber, the car you intend to use must also meet Uber’s standards before you can get started. It must be no older than 16 years, have four doors, and have enough seat belts for all occupants. It must also be free from major body damage. There are various levels of Uber services, as well, including UberXL and Uber Black. Each of these has its own specific set of requirements that must be met if you intend to drive for either service. If, for whatever reason, your car does not meet these standards (or if you simply choose not to use it for work), you can also rent a vehicle from one of Uber’s partner companies to complete your trips. The ones on offer already qualify under Uber’s standards.
Like with Uber, driving for Lyft also requires that you and your vehicle meet specific eligibility requirements. These include the following:
Lyft will also check your driving history and criminal history before allowing you to perform rides for the company. Some of the same violations or convictions that will disqualify you from driving for Uber will also be disqualifying for Lyft. However, unlike Uber, Lyft requires that its drivers be at least 25 years old and have at least one year of prior driving experience.
Lyft’s vehicle requirements are similar to Uber’s. Your vehicle must have four doors and seat belts for all passengers. And on that note, it must be able to accommodate at least five but no more than eight passengers, including the driver. Additionally, the vehicle must be no older than the 2009 model year (15, as of 2024), be in good working condition, and feature no significant cosmetic damage.
Just because you have a driver’s license and a car does not mean you are qualified to drive for either Uber or Lyft in Seattle. While each company’s requirements are similar, there are important differences between the two companies that must be observed. Qualifying to drive for one company does not mean you will be able to drive for the other.
