Seattle Viagra Melanoma Attorneys

Viagra also known as Sildenafil, is a prescription medication that is used to treat men with Erectile Dysfunction (ED). Currently, there have been reports of patients using the medication being at risk for developing Melanoma. Melanoma is one of the deadliest forms of skin cancer.

How Does Viagra Work?

Viagra works by inhibiting the enzyme that prevents blood from reaching the penis. Viagra was approved by the FDA in 1998 and has since become the leading blockbuster prescription medication for Erectile Dysfunction (ED).

Despite its popularity among men with Erectile Dysfunction, may men have reported being diagnosed with melanoma, in addition to other serious medical conditions after being prescribed and taking Viagra. Some of these more common side effects associated with Viagra include, but are not necessarily limited to:

  • Stuffy nose
  • Headache
  • Memory problems,
  • Upset stomach
  • Back pain

More serious side effects associated with Viagra include:

  • Sudden vision loss
  • Ringing in the hears/ hearing loss,
  • Chest pain,
  • Pain to arm or shoulder,
  • Nausea, sweating , general ill feeling,
  • Swelling of hands, ankles or feet,
  • Shortness of breath,
  • Vision changes,
  • Feeling lightheaded or fainting
  • Painful erection lasting 4+ hours

Study Links Viagra to Melanoma

In a study of nearly 26,000 men that was published in JAMA Internal Magazine, researchers found that Viagra increased the risk of Melanoma by 84% and that men who use the drug are twice as likely to develop Melanoma. Melanoma is the deadliest form of skin cancer. More information about the study can be found here:  http://archinte.jamanetwork.com/article.aspx?articleid=1857095

The study does not show that Viagra causes Melanoma rather it shows that there is a correlation between the two. Further studies must be conducted to determine if the relationship between Viagra and Melanoma are causal.

History of Viagra Lawsuits

Pfizer pharmaceuticals the manufacturer of Viagra has had to repeatedly defend Viagra in courtrooms for a Varity of reasons. They have already spent millions of dollars in settlements and the amount is projected to increase as research exposing the link to Melanoma appears. Past Viagra law suits include:

Hearing Loss

In 2007 the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) received reports of 25 men filing lawsuits against Pfizer pharmaceuticals alleging that they suffered from hearing loss after taking Viagra. As a result of the allegations the FDA changed the Viagra label to include warnings about hearing loss. Information about the label change can be found here: http://www.fda.gov/NewsEvents/Newsroom/PressAnnouncements/2007/ucm109012.htm

Vision Loss

After 43 reports people suffering from vision complications after taking Viagra appeard, the FDA started conducting research to see if there was a link.  The FDA  made a statement that "There is no evidence showing that NAION occurred more frequently in men taking Viagra than men of similar age and health who did not take Viagra," (FDA). However lawsuits have stated that Viagra has caused users to develop Non-Arctic Ischemic Optic Neuropathy (NAION). This condition is a result of blood flow being prevented from reaching the optic nerves and can result in drastic vision change and loss.

Heart Problems

The first complications associated with Viagra that were reported to the FDA had to do with heart complications. The medication was causing users blood pressure to drop. As a result men began to suffer from heart attacks and strokes. The first lawsuits that were filed against Pfizer Pharmaceuticals also had to do with heart-related issues.

Currently,  is research being conducted to determine if there is a causal relationship between Viagra and Melanoma. The results of the research could play a significant role in holding Pfizer Pharmaceuticals accountable for their negligence in future Melanoma related lawsuits.
