According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) it is estimated that 10,839 people died in alcohol-impaired driving crashes in 2009. Drunk driving fatalities accounted for 32% of all traffic deaths that year. On average someone is killed in an alcohol-impaired driving crash about every 50 minutes in the U.S.
In 2008, 255 people in Washington State lost their lives in fatal alcohol related motor vehicle collisions. One hundred eighty-two (182) of those accidents involved a drunk driver whose blood alcohol concentration (BAC) was 0.08 or higher. In Washington State, 34% of all fatal motor vehicle crashes involve a driver that was under the influence of alcohol.
For more than 25 years, Mothers Against Drunk Driving has helped save lives by raising awareness about the dangers of drunk driving. But still thousands lose their lives or are touched by this violent crime each year. In Washington State MADD is an all-volunteer organization solely supported by your donations. Please help us support the cause! You can help eliminate drunk driving in Washington State by making a donation to MADD.
Your donation will be used to support MADD programs such as The Campaign to Eliminate Drunk Driving which calls for high visibility law enforcement, mandatory interlocks for all convicted DUI offenders and advanced technology that will make it virtually impossible for a drunk person to start their car. And the Power of Parents program which is a powerful new web resource where parents can find research-proven strategies for preventing underage drinking at home and in their community.
