Levaquin (levofloxacin) – in the fluoroquinolones class of antibiotics – is a popular antibiotic drug for people in Seattle and throughout Washington state, and is designed to treat bacterial infections of the skin, kidneys, prostate, bladder (typically for urinary tract infections), sinuses, and other areas of the body. Medical providers and experts have previously been aware of a number of mild side effects associated with Levaquin, but it was recently revealed that Johnson & Johnson – the manufacturer of Levaquin – may have been aware of patients’ risks of developing aortic aneurysm and aortic dissection, in addition to a host of other serious medical conditions as a result of taking the drug.
If you or a loved one has been diagnosed with aortic dissection, aortic aneurysm, or is otherwise suffering from serious medical complications after having taken Levaquin, you may be able to pursue a claim against the drug manufacturer and recover financial compensation for your injuries and other damages. Our attorneys and legal team are currently investigating injury and illness claims involving Johnson & Johnson’s Levaquin.
Levaquin And Other Fluoroquinolones
Like other fluoroquinolones, Levaquin is designed to stop the reproduction of bacteria by targeting the bacteria’s DNA and impairing its ability to spread. It is very commonly prescribed for patients who are dealing with a urinary tract infection (UTI).
Other similar drugs in the fluoroquinolone class include:
- Cipro (ciprofloxacin)
- Noroxin (norfloxacin)
- Floxin (ofloxacin)
- Trovan (trovafloxacin)
- Maxaquin (lomefloxacin)
Common Levaquin Injuries & Side Effects
Initially, the minor side effects being found in patients taking Levaquin were not considered life-threatening and the company included warnings about these conditions in advertising materials and packaging. Some of these less serious side effects include:
- Tendinitis and weakening of tendons, particularly the Achilles
- Muscle weakness
- Nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea
- Difficulty sleeping
- Rash and skin irritation
However, it has recently been determined that patients who are taking Levaquin and other fluoroquinolones are at an increased risk of developing life-threatening injuries such as aortic aneurysm and aortic dissection. A study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) found that Levaquin and other fluoroquinolones may increase the risk of aortic aneurysm and aortic dissection by as much as 100 percent.
