Eye Damage and Injuries Associated with Taking Elmiron
Elmiron was approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) back in 2001 for use in the relief of pain or discomfort that is commonly associated with interstitial cystitis. At the time it was approved by the FDA, the marketed side effects associated with the drug were rare occurrences of hair loss, diarrhea, nausea, and mild rash.
However, in 2018 it was determined that many patients who had taken Elmiron were showing signs of pigmentary maculopathy. A 2019 study released by Kaiser Permanente of Northern California showed that a majority of the Elmiron patients in the study demonstrated eye damage or disease resulting from taking Elmiron.
Drug Manufacturers’ Liability for Injuries
Janssen Pharmaceuticals is the company responsible for manufacturing and marketing Elmiron. The company never disclosed to its potential patients or the general public that there could be serious, life-altering side effects associated with taking the drug. Rather, the company listed a variety of minor side effects which likely increased public confidence in taking the drug without any major drawbacks.
“The warning labels Janssen put on the Elmiron bottle does not include any language about eye damage or associated medical issues that might result from taking the drug,” says Seattle attorney Chris Davis, founder of Davis Law Group. “However, studies have shown a strong link between the drug and patients who have suffered serious, potentially irreversible eye damage. It’s important that patients who were harmed by this oversight have a chance to be made whole in the eyes of the law.”
Davis Law Group continues to investigate claims of serious eye injuries or damage after taking Elmiron, and our team is working with associate counsel throughout the country to assist injured victims in pursuing a claim against Janssen Pharmaceuticals.
