If you or a loved one has developed thyroid cancer, kidney cancer, testicular cancer, or any other illness or disease after being exposed to perfluorooctanoate – commonly known as ‘C8’ or ‘The Teflon Toxin’ – it may be in your best interests to contact an attorney at Davis Law Group, P.S. to discuss a potential claim for personal injury or wrongful death.
DuPont USA, a United States-based chemicals manufacturing company, has recently come under fire for knowingly allowing drinking water supplies and other natural resources to become contaminated with perfluorooctanoate, or ‘C8’ – a chemical that is used in many of its products. The chemical has since been linked to a variety of medical conditions and illnesses, including various forms of cancer.
Perfluorooctanoate (C8) is a key ingredient used in the production of Teflon, the water-resistant coating used in certain types of cookware, clothing, and other consumer products. DuPont has a manufacturing plant in Parkersburg, West Virginia which is the target of multiple lawsuits alleging that the company knew it had polluted water supplies in the area, which in turn poisoned residents in the community.
Concerning Developments in C8 Contamination
In 2001, approximately 80,000 residents in the Ohio Valley region filed a class-action lawsuit against DuPont claiming that the company was responsible for contaminating the local water supply. That lawsuit resulted in a $343 million settlement that would go towards the medical costs and other environmental safeguards to repair the damage that had been done as a result of the contamination.
But DuPont USA saw another wave of litigation as recently as 2013, when former employees and residents affected by the contamination began to develop serious medical conditions, including kidney and testicular cancers and a surge in birth defects and abnormalities. Those lawsuits cite the company’s own scientific studies which are alleged to indicate that perfluorooctanoate (C8) is, in fact, quite toxic and dangerous to humans.
Perhaps the most shocking claims found in these lawsuits allege that DuPont USA knew about the risks and inherent side-effects as early as the 1960s. Despite these findings, the company has repeatedly assured the public and national media that perfluorooctanoate (C8) is safe.
Company Denies Liability Despite Obvious Signs
Unsurprisingly, the company refuses to acknowledge its own responsibility and liability for causing harm to innocent consumers. In a written statement, a DuPont USA spokesman said, “Lawsuits such as these ignore family history, lifestyle choices and other causes of health issues and diseasein specific individuals. The company has been otherwise uncooperative in making the victims of their negligence whole again:
“DuPont denies all the allegations in court filings, saying that plaintiffs’ damages, if any, were caused by acts of God or actions of others, over which DuPont had no control, and were not reasonably foreseeable by the company,” according to an article in The Huffington Post.
If you or a loved one has suffered injuries or developed a serious medical condition and believe it to have been caused by DuPont USA’s dangerous chemical perfluorooctanoate (C8), you may be entitled to significant financial compensation that could help you pay for the medical treatment and other damages that you have incurred as a result of DuPont USA’s negligence.
