Skull Fracture Accident in Normandy Park, WA
A woman was just charged with reckless endangerment after a serious accident occurred on August 26, 2011. She was driving her SUV and allegedly told her son and two friends to ride on her back bumper, causing one of the boys to fall off the vehicle and fracture his skull.
The 49-year-old Normandy Park resident Carmen Duncanson was driving down her very long and steep private driveway when her 13-year-old son and two of his friends (who are brothers) stood on the rear bumper.
“As she drove, she swerved, as if to make the ride more fun for the boys,” Normandy Park police officer Brian Morris said. One of the boys told officers that Duncanson “punched the gas to about 20 m.p.h.”

One of the boys hit his head and the other suffered from serious road rash.
Once the boys fell off the car, the mother stopped the vehicle and she and her husband brought the boys into their house. Initially, they did not call 911 and attempted to treat their injuries on their own. Ten minutes later, they brought the boys to Highline Hospital in their SUV.
The boy that hit his head was taken to Harborview Medical Center with two skull fractures and declared to be in critical condition. He immediately went into surgery at Harborview to remove a hematoma, where he stayed for 6 nights. Doctors put 43 staples in his heads and he was ordered to avoid contacts sports for 1 year.
Initially, Duncanson refused to talk to police about the near-fatal accident. She also did not allow them to speak with her son.
The two boys said she let them ride on her bumper before but she did not drive fast nor swerve. Duncanson has not been jailed but has been asked to not drive any children whose parents do not know about the incident.
Let this be a lesson to parents everywhere - even when something can seem harmless and fun, you need to think about the repercussions. Thankfully, the boys survived the accident. Davis Law Group hopes for a full recovery of the young boys.
