People are naturally drawn to a good deal when it comes to consumer behavior, which is why cheap lawyers may seem like a good idea at the beginning. But when an accident victim is looking for a personal injury attorney, it is important to understand how the price of an attorney can affect you and your case for years to come.
I often think to myself, “Wouldn’t it be great if everyone in the world was honest and kept their word, eliminating the need for those involved to hire an attorney to help settle or resolve their disputes?” A world where insurance companies care just as much about their paying policyholders as they do about corporate profits and multimillion dollar compensation packages for high-level employees?
Unfortunately, we do not live in such a world and the reality is that countless injured people invest their valuable time and effort into searching for the right attorney to handle their personal injury claims. Whether it’s because of an insurance company pushing back against their claim or they simply don’t know where to begin with pursuing a claim, accident victims often find themselves feeling overmatched and outnumbered.
The Mirage of the ‘Cheap Lawyer’
Imagine that, during a time where a person becomes increasingly vulnerable because of their injuries and lack of legal knowledge, an accident victim sees an advertisement for a lawyer that charges a relatively low hourly rate. Immediately, the victim exclaims, “Bingo!” and picks up the phone to call the so-called “cheap lawyer” without realizing they may be making a huge mistake.
The truth is, making the decision to hire a personal injury attorney is much different than making the decision to purchase a pair of socks. When it comes to socks, the only difference between the store brand and the name brand may be the name itself, and there’s a good chance that the store brand – which is usually significantly cheaper – is going to be just as effective as the name brand.
Cheap lawyers, however, are much different than cheap socks. First, it is important to understand that a cheap lawyer is probably cheap for a reason. As is the case with all other high-involvement purchase decisions that we make as consumers, you get exactly what you pay for when you hire a personal injury attorney.
Lawyer Mistakes Can Damage Your Case
Many accident victims contact the Davis Law Group each day complaining about the cheap lawyer they hired to represent them only to regret that decision later on. However, there are many instances where – while we would absolutely love to help as many injury victims as we can – we are unable to take a person’s case because of the damage that has been done by the cheap lawyer.
You see, if a lawyer makes any mistakes or misses any opportunities while handling your case and you wish to hire a different lawyer to take over, your new attorney would not be able to correct any mistakes made by the cheap lawyer. And since those mistakes could have a serious impact on the overall value of your case, your original decision to hire a cheap lawyer could end up costing you tens of thousands of dollars in the long run. Because of this, most attorneys try to avoid taking cases that have been in the possession of another attorney for a significant amount of time.
In a recent Forbes article about hiring lawyers for business legal matters, contributor Amy Rees Anderson said it best:
“The only regrets I have ever had when it came to legal bills and lawyers was either not spending enough money to hire the good ones, or the times I thought I was saving money by hiring the cheap ones. Go ahead and make as many lawyer jokes as you want to (because let’s face it, some of them are just plain hilarious!), but never forget that nothing will be more expensive to your company than hiring cheap lawyers, and nothing will be more painful than hiring the wrong ones.”
