A Washington State community hospital was responsible for several medical errors during a boy’s birth, causing him to become a quadriplegic, unable to speak or move.
His heart rate was not monitored for two hours before delivery, and the physician did not call a specialist when his head became stuck in the birth canal. The doctor used forceps that he was not qualified to handle. The nurse put an oxygen tube in his lunch when he was unable to breathe on his own.
The doctors waited four days before having him transported to a hospital with a critical care unit for newborns. His family filed a lawsuit against the hospital, resulting in a $5 million dollar medical malpractice settlement.
