A 17-year-old boy from Tukwila has been formally charged with first-degree assault following an incident in which he is accused of beating another man with a metal sign post, leaving him with a life-threatening head injury.
The Seattle Times reports that Jaquon Hogues was involved in an altercation with an older man, identified as 30-year-old Hassan Arr, just before 1 a.m Thursday. A taxi driver saw Arr being chased by a younger man, believed to be Hogues, into a convenience store. The store employee reportedly told both men to leave the store, and Arr fled down the street towards the Edgewood Apartments, where he lived.
A neighbor at the apartment complex heard loud footsteps and the sound of a heavy object being dragged in the stairwell. She then heard a grunting noise, leading her to believe that someone had been hurt, followed by the sound of a metal pole hitting the ground. She saw a young man outside the window and heard the victim grasping for air, so she called 911.
Police located Hogues, who matched the witness’s description, and noticed that he had blood on his clothes. They then located the victim, who had been laying in the dirt near a sign post that had blood on it as well. Arr had a disabled arm from a previous injury, which indicated he was not able to properly defend himself from the attack.
Hogues is being held at the Norm Maleng Regional Justice Center in Kent in lieu of $500,000 bail. Arr is being treated at Harborview Medical Center, where he reportedly remains unconscious and is breathing with the assistance of a ventilator. Officials believe that he may have suffered from a serious traumatic brain injury in the attack.
