A team of scientists reported that two proteins prevented significant loss of tissue and scarring in rats with severed spinal cords. The proteins also minimized toxicity at the injury site. It also promoted healthy and new nerve growth after a month of treatment.
The research findings seem to be very innovative and significant because there is currently no way of stopping spinal cord injury progression to develop into paralysis.
About 300,000 people each year injured their spinal cords, leading to permanent disability.
One of the researchers, Dr. Goss said he is looking to try this on humans in the next few years.
''No one has achieved this level of repair in an animal before … It's very exciting and promising research,'' he said.
In order for this experiment to develop, the project needs about $20 million over the next 5 years.
Spinal Cord Injury Statistics
Automobile accidents cause 42.1 % of spinal cord injuries. More than 11,000 people suffer a spinal cord injury each year in the United States, while some victims will experience a full recovery, others will be completely and permanently paralyzed.

Car accidents are also frequently the cause of other serious back injuries such as a herniated disc. In both cases the accident victim may require surgery, years of treatment and physical therapy, and the injuries can completely change the life of the victim.
