Updated on: 11/11/2019

Teacher-Student Sex Abuse Is A Big Problem

sexual abuse by a teacherAccording to a report commissioned by the U.S. Department of Education between 6 percent and 10 percent of public school children across the country have been sexually abused or harassed by school employees and teachers.

According to a study conducted for the government by researchers at Hofstra University "the physical sexual abuse of students in schools is likely more than 100 times the abuse by priests."

Perhaps one of the most infamous cases of teacher-student sex abuse is that of Mary Kay Letourneau who had sex with her 13-year-old student Vili Fulaau.

It is estimated that in Washington State over 150 coaches of girls sports were fired or reprimanded for sexual misconduct in the 1990s.
