Semi Truck Crashes with SUV in Renton

Updated on: 3/6/2019

A semi truck accident in Renton Monday morning caused a serious traffic backup on Interstate 405 and resulted in one person being arrested for drunk driving.

The Washington State Patrol (WSP) says the incident began when an SUV was stopped in the middle of I-405 near SR 900 at around 2 a.m. Monday. A WSP trooper was approaching the stalled vehicle when a semi truck attempted to pass the SUV and ended up clipping the side of the vehicle.

The collision caused the semi truck to jackknife, and it ended up blocking all the southbound lanes of I-405 and shut down traffic for several hours. After crashing into the SUV, the semi truck struck a concrete divider and knocked a two-ton block off the foundation.

“The driver of the SUV was extremely lucky, judging from the force of how hard he hit that barrier and moved it,” said WSP Trooper Nathan Dashiell. “If he had actually made good solid contact with that car we’d actually be doing a death investigation here.”

Surprisingly, no one was injured in this particular semi truck accident. The driver was arrested on drunken driving charges, according to police reports. The southbound lanes of the freeway that were blocked eventually reopened at approximately 5:30 a.m.
