A reckless driver is believed to have caused a serious motor vehicle collision resulting in the death of a passenger in another vehicle, according to the Pierce County Sheriff.
Sgt. Darren Moss says the collision occurred just after 9:30 p.m. Wednesday. A man in a silver Dodge Charger was stopped in a parking lot near 99th Street South and Pacific Avenue South after striking a curb. Deputies stopped to check on the driver, who immediately fled the scene after seeing police vehicles approaching him.
The man drove recklessly for several blocks in an apparent attempt to flee police, but eventually crashed into another vehicle at the intersection of Pacific Avenue and 96th Street East. There was reportedly catastrophic damage to both vehicles involved.
A 47-year-old female passenger riding in the vehicle struck by the fleeing driver was reportedly pronounced dead at the scene of the collision. The fleeing driver, his passenger, and the driver of the second vehicle were all taken to a nearby hospital with serious injuries.
Legal Recourse For Victims After A Serious Vehicle Collision
Officials with the Sheriff's office added that the reckless driver is likely to be subjected to a blood draw warrant in order to determine if the driver was under the influence of alcohol or drugs during this ordeal. Regardless, the driver is likely to face a host of criminal charges stemming from the incident, including vehicular assault and vehicular homicide.
Additionally, accident victims should have a complete understanding of their legal rights and options for recourse after a life-altering incident such as this one. The surviving family members of a person who is tragically killed in a collision may be eligible for benefits and financial compensation in these situations.
