Police Searching For Hit-And-Run Driver Who Struck Motorcyclist In Lacey

Updated on: 6/20/2019

Officials with the Washington State Patrol are searching for a hit-and-run driver who triggered a multi-vehicle collision on Interstate 5 near Lacey on Saturday.

According to news reports about the incident, a woman driving a white 2001 GMC Sonoma pickup truck struck a motorcyclist on the I-5 off-ramp for Marvin Road in Lacey. The impact forced the motorcyclist to collide with a second motorcycle on the off-ramp, which then collided with a Nissan Pathfinder in the next lane.

Police told reporters that one of the motorcyclists was injured, while the other motorcyclist and the driver of the Nissan were uninjured.

Hit-And-Run Liability And Other Legal Consequences

Police say that the woman driving the white GMC pickup truck fled the scene of the motor vehicle accident without exchanging information with the other parties involved or stopping to render aid. Washington state law requires drivers involved in collisions to stop at the scene and participate in an exchange of information with all other parties involved.

Troopers with the WSP say they are looking for the driver, and that she will face felony hit-and-run charges if she is found. Failure to abide these laws not only comes with criminal legal implications, but also civil penalties as well. Even if there was a chance that the woman was not at fault for initially causing the collision, her decision to flee the scene will not help her chances of avoiding legal liability.

Accident victims who are injured as a result of a hit-and-run crash may have difficulty getting their medical bills paid until the at-fault party is identified. This is one of the countless examples of the benefits of carrying Uninsured Motorist coverage on your insurance policy, as you would theoretically be able to recover benefits from your own policy even if the at-fault driver is never identified.
