Motorcyclist Killed In Collision with Semi Truck On I-5

Updated on: 10/30/2020

A motorcyclist is dead after an accident involving a semi-truck on I-5 near Tumwater Friday morning.

The rider was killed after being struck by two different semi-trucks after losing control while entering the freeway.

State troopers arrived at the scene just before 10:30 a.m. Friday morning to find the 29-year-old victim dead at the scene.

Initial investigations at the scene show the rider may have lost control after crossing the gore to enter the freeway and losing control on a slick oil-like substance on the road or after striking a curb.

After losing control it appears he struck the right rear of one semi, before being struck by a second truck that it appears to have failed to stop at the scene.

Washington State Patrol has an open investigation into the incident as a hit-and-run.

Legal Recovery Options For Motorcycle Accident Victims

Motorcycle accidents are devastating enough on their own, with high fatality rates regardless of what the other vehicle involved is, but a motorcycle accident involving a semi-truck is potentially one of the worst-case scenarios for riders.

Knowing that it appears the rider lost control and was potentially entering the freeway using the gore, a ticketable offense in the state of Washington, and lost control before striking either vehicle, it is possible that the insurance companies for both semi-trucks involve could put up more of a fight than a typical accident claim.

Accident victims who may have made some mistakes in the events leading up to their accident are not without recourse, as comparative negligence law allows a victim who may hold some liability for their accident to still make a recovery proportional to a negotiated amount of liability assumed by the third party driver.

These claims are complex and take time in any accident case, but with accidents involving corporate insurers that cover semi-trucks and the complex nature of damages in wrongful death claims, it would be in the best interest of family members to ensure they have an experienced team of wrongful death attorneys on their side.
