A 65-year-old man was killed Thursday afternoon after he crashed his motorcycle into the back end of a box truck on Highway 542 in Whatcom County near Bellingham.
The Washington State Patrol (WSP) says that the box truck and another vehicle were stopped in the westbound lane of Highway 542 waiting for oncoming traffic. The motorcyclist was approaching this intersection and apparently did not see the box truck in time, which resulted in the motorcyclist crashing into the back end of the truck.
A witness who was traveling behind the rider said everything appeared normal and the motorcyclist was going the speed limit at the time of the accident. State troopers are unsure what caused the man to not see the approaching traffic. Alcohol and drugs also do not appear to be a factor in causing the crash.
