According to Idaho State Police a semi lost its trailer while traveling southbound on I-95 just outside of Coeur d’Alene, where it then struck a northbound vehicle with two passengers who are now in critical condition.
First responders on the scene had to lift the trailer off of the crushed car to extract the two adult male victims and transport them to local hospital where they are now being treated.
At this time it is not known what caused the trailer to come unhitched, whether it was a mechanical issue or simply a failure to properly secure it, but investigators were on scene for hours after the accident gathering facts.
Unhitched Semi-Trailers
The trailer of a semi-truck, like any load, is the responsibility of the vehicle operator to secure and maintain, and liability for accidents such as these could fall on both the operator as well as their employer if training/ management does not meet reasonable expectations and standards.
Employers could be held liable in cases in which standards to which operators are trained are found to be not substantial enough to maintain reasonable safety standards or if training or enforcement is found to be below reasonable standards.
Accidents involving commercial vehicles often involve substantial damage simply due to the nature of the size and weight of the vehicle involved and injuries sustained are often serious.
