Infant Boy Drowns in Yakima-area Irrigation Canal

An 18-month-old boy died Saturday afternoon in Terrace Heights after wandering away from his home and into a nearby irrigation canal. According to authorities, the boy was missing for one minute before family members began searching for him. They looked throughout their own home and others nearby before calling police.
Fire crews and law enforcement began searching the area, and found the boy in the canal approximately 100 yards south of Terrace Heights Drive. Reports indicate that emergency personnel tried to resuscitate the boy at the scene and at Yakima Valley Memorial Hospital but he was unresponsive.
