Woman Killed in Hit-and-Run Crash in Kent

A woman was struck and killed by a hit-and-run driver merging onto State Route 167 this morning in Kent, according to the Washington State Patrol.

The incident occurred around 5:15 a.m. on the onramp to SR 167 from 84th Avenue South.

The driver of the vehicle did not stop and police are investigating leads to track the driver down. Police say there were no witnesses to the crash.

The 46-year-old victim was attempting to cross the crosswalk on 84th Avenue South.

"This is a Felony Hit and Run Fatality," Washington State Patrol trooper Rick Johnson said on Twitter. "Ramp will be closed for an extended period of time."

The most recent data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reveals that one in five pedestrian fatalities are the result of hit-and-runs accidents, and 60 percent of all hit-and-run deaths are among pedestrians.

Those numbers are staggeringly high. So why do so many drivers leave the scene of an accident?

  • Driving under the influence
  • Panic or fear of consequences
  • Driving with invalid or suspended driver’s license
  • Driving an underinsured or uninsured vehicle
  • Outstanding warrant
  • Falling asleep behind the wheel
  • Driver was talking on cell phone or texting
