One man was killed and another was injured after a two-vehicle crash near Nooksack Valley High School in Everson Tuesday morning. The incident reportedly occurred at approximately 4:30 a.m. in the 3300 block of East Badger Road.
Oracio Padilla was driving his 1996 Chevrolet pickup truck eastbound on East Badger Road when he was struck from behind by a 1997 Ford pickup truck. The Ford, driven by 19-year-old Tanner Tjoelker from Blaine, collided with the rear end of Padilla’s vehicle and flipped onto its side.
Padilla, a 23-year-old man from Lynden, died at the scene of the car accident. Tjoelker was transported to nearby St. Joseph Hospital with non-life threatening injuries to his face. Washington State Patrol (WSP) trooper Keith Leary said both men were headed to work at nearby dairy farms, and that the WSP is still investigating the cause of the crash.
Leary does not suspect drugs or alcohol were involved, but added that Tjoelker’s speed may have been a factor and that Padilla may not have had his headlights on.
