An 88-year-old man was killed in a pedestrian accident October 30 after being hit by a dump truck near Lower Queen Anne in Seattle.
The Seattle Police Department (SPD) says a red 2008 Kenworth dump truck struck the elderly pedestrian, identified as 88-year-old Herbert Whitman, in the intersection of 2nd Avenue West and West Mercer Street at approximately 2:45 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 30.
“Preliminary investigation indicates that a 2008 red Kenworth dump truck was facing north on 2nd Avenue West at Mercer Street,” said Detective Jeff Kappel of the SPD. “The adult male truck driver initiated an eastbound turn and collided with the male pedestrian in the intersection. The circumstances leading up to the collision remain under investigation.”
Police reportedly evaluated the driver of the dump truck for any potential signs of impairment, but they found no reason to believe he was under the influence of drugs or alcohol.
“There were no citations issued at the scene, which is standard procedure in serious traffic collisions requiring extensive follow up investigation and collision reconstruction,” Kappel added.
Whitman was reportedly transported to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle following the pedestrian accident, where he died of his injuries.
