A Pierce County deputy crashed into a scooter at Emerson Street and 67th Avenue West last night and killed the man on the moped.
The deputy was responding to a call for backup from another officer who was searching for people who left the scene after being stopped for a violation. The deputy reportedly hit the man who was driving a 2007 Honda scooter, causing him to go over an embankment before landing in a ditch.
A witness of the fatal accident said that the officer saw the moped and tried to avoid him but there was no time. "Our guy was in the turn lane and the scooter was in the turn lane. And our guy left the turn lane to avoid him at the same time the scooter left the turn lane. And they hit each other," he said.
The patrol car also went over an embankment. He was stuck in his car while it was in the bushes, pinned between two trees. The 62-year-old driver of the scooter was later pronounced dead at the hospital. The deputy had minor injuries.
