Three vehicles and a semi truck were involved in a collision Tuesday afternoon on U.S. 195 eight miles south of Rosalia in Thornton, according to the Washington State Patrol.
The incident occurred at 11:34 a.m. at milepost 55 in Whitman County.
Police say a combination truck and trailer driven by a 55-year-old Spokane man was traveling northbound on SR 195. Three vehicles up ahead were stopped for a flagger. The semi truck struck a Chevrolet Silverado pickup, causing a chain reaction involving two other vehicles.
The driver of the semi was not injured. A 40-year-old Idaho man in the Silverado was injured and transported to Sacred Heart Medical Center in Spokane. Also injured was an 81-year-old Rosalia woman in a Nissan Maxima. She was taken to Whitman Community Hospital. A 62-year-old man in a Lexus RX350 was not injured.
The WSP listed the cause of the crash as inattention. The semi truck driver was charged with second degree negligent driving.

The Dangers of Inattentive Truck Drivers
A truck driver’s most obvious duty should be to safely operate their vehicle while on public roads. These drivers have a responsibility to uphold these safety standards because the consequences are so high.
This responsibility includes remaining free from the effects of impairing substances while behind the wheel, staying rested, and also paying full attention to their surroundings. Inattention, as was the cause of the accident described above, can be serious and costly.
When an accident involving a semi truck does occur, accident victims may be entitled to financial compensation for their injuries. The truck driver and potentially the trucking company may be liable for paying these damages.
The trucking company may not be liable in every truck accident case, but they may be named as an additional at-fault party when the victim shows that there was some negligence on the employer’s part. For example, if the trucking company did not adequately train its drivers about the rules and regulations of the road, they may be held partially responsible.
Finding all at-fault parties in a trucking accident case is extremely important. With potentially millions of dollars on the line and serious injuries affecting victims for possibly years, it’s crucial that you understand your legal rights.
