Facts &
Figures

According to statistics from the US Department of
Transportation (DOT), around 5000 pedestrians are
killed in motor vehicle collisions each year - about
11 percent of all motor vehicle deaths. Put another
way, nearly two out of every 100,000 people in the
United States died in a pedestrian accident last
year.

Review of injury
biomechanics in car-pedestrian collisions
Crash Safety Division, Chalmers University of
Technology
The aim of this paper is to survey the
state-of-the-art of injury biomechanics in
vehicle-pedestrian collisions, including the dynamic
responses, injury mechanisms, tolerance levels,
injury criteria and parameters that have relevance
for injuries in different loading conditions. A
condensed overview is given based on the published
and ongoing studies in pedestrian injury
biomechanics. The need for future research on
pedestrian injury prevention is presented.
