For the majority of people, getting out on the water during the week is really not an option because of family commitments, general busyness, and of course dreaded work. Because of this, most people with a boat are on the water during the weekend and try to pack weeks worth of boating into a day and a half.
The problem with being a weekend boater is that you can find yourself making poor decisions that you would not otherwise make. Because of this, there are four common mistakes that boaters tend to make.
Overloading Your Boat
One of the most common mistakes that someone can make is overloading their boat. The problem is that when you overload your boat you put other people as well as yourself in danger because it does not steer as well, and if you are unable to steer your boat the way you should be able to, the chances of being in an accident are greatly increased.
Keep night time speed limit at 15 miles per hour
The night time speed on the water is something that many people do not agree upon. Some feel that safe speeds to travel at are 25 mph, or 35 mph. Hear at Davis Law Group, we feel that the safest speed to travel on the water at during the evening is 15 mph. We feel that this speed is safe because at higher speeds you are unable to react quickly, especially with limited sight distance. At 15 mph, you are able to safely navigate in the dark.
Check your navigation light before pulling off the dock
Making sure that your navigation light, and all of your other gauges are working is extremely important. Knowing that your boat is working properly will provide both yourself and passengers peace of mind that you would not otherwise have.
Designate a Boat Captain (The captain will drive the boat and not drink)
Just like when going to party and needing to have a designated driver, the importance of having a sober driver driving your boat cannot be overstated. Drinking and driving on the water is no different than driving and driving in a car. The most important thing that someone can do is simply keep the safety of themselves, others, and other boats. By making sure that there is a designated driver you effectively do your part in making sure that the safety of everyone is put at the top of your priorities list.
