This July is Adult Abuse Prevention Month where Washington State is focused on putting an end to abuse of elderly people who are in nursing homes or in the care of a caregiver service.
There were roughly 14,000 reports of abuse in nursing homes but it is estimated that only one in fives cases of nursing home abuse it reported. That means there were an estimated 70,000 cases of elderly abuse last year alone. This needs to be end. Now.
Mike Fisher, the Chair of Nursing Home Litigation and Elder Abuse Section of the Washington Association for Justice says that the key to ending nursing home abuse is having increased involvement by family and friends. " You need to be an advocate on that persons behalf. You need to be involved...it always comes down to having family there and checking to make sure that care is appropriate." According to Fisher, too many people are afraid to report potential abuse or neglect cases because they may be embarrassed or simply afraid of retribution. However, reporting the issues is critical because it helps State investigators identify potential patterns at specific facilities as well as issues that may be occurring state wide.
Some suggested actions to take if you have a loved one who is in a nursing home or care facility are:
- Take notes
- Be observant
- Come at random times
- Ask Questions
