Drownings: The Preventable Tragedy

This time of year, we hear too many stories of people both young and old tragically losing their lives as the result of drowning. In 2007, 3443 deaths occurred as the result of drowning. An additional 496 fatalities took place as a result of boating accidents, whether from drowning as the result of the accident or injuries sustained during the accident.
Drownings may not seem to be a big issue, but the fact is that it is that second leading cause of death for children between the ages of 1-14 years old. Even more alarming, 30 percent of children who between ages 1-4 years old who died accidentally, drowned.
The thing about drownings is that they are preventable. If you are taking your family to the beach, lake or pool be sure to check for the following hazards:
- Lack of Barriers: If your children are swimming in an area in a lake or the ocean without barriers, it is easy to kids to swim to areas further than they normally would. If no physical barriers are established, be sure to establish your own barriers.
- Surf Conditions (in the ocean): If you are at the beach be sure that you know which way the tide is going. One of the largest causing of drownings is being caught into the under toe.
- Lack of Life Jackets: Nobody likes wearing life jackets, but they really do save lives. If your kids are going to be swimming in deep water, be sure that they are wearing life jackets.
