Concussions Doubled Among Child Athletes

  • Child concussions have doubled over a 10 year period
  • Study conducted by the American Academy of Pediatrics.
  • Study looked at emergency department visits and concussions among young athletes ranging in age from 8 to 19.
  • From 2001 to 2005 there were over half a million emergency room visits for concussions.  
Researchers have collected data to analyze the number of emergency rooms visits for children aged 8 to 19 involved in sports related concussions. Their research shows that the number of concussions has doubled from 1997 to 2007.

Teens ranging from 14 to 19 are more likely to be involved in a sports-related concussion as data shows that emergency room visits have tripled.

Study was conducted by the American Academy of Pediatrics and data was collected from the National Electronic Injury Surveillance System.
