Donna Schwendeman is the Recipient of $100
Ms. Schwendeman demonstrates a true dedication and excitement for teaching, making her an ideal teacher, in which a student’s parent nominated her for the award.
“Ever since I became a mother nine years ago, Donna Schwendeman is the type of teacher I prayed that my children would have,” she said. “Sure, she teaches her 1st graders their ABC’s and how to add and subtract, but she teaches them so much more than that.”
Ms. Schwendeman incorporates many fun activities into her curriculum, including baking, singing, acting and much more. At the end of the school year, her students put on a production of the Wizard of Oz.
Kenee says her daughter Harper is very shy and soft spoken, but was chosen for the lead role as Dorothy.
“Somehow Ms. Schwendeman brought out a talent in Harper for acting and speaking in public,” she said. “I was so proud of how she recited her lines without hesitation and with such emotion.”
Ms. Schwendeman spends her own money on baking supplies, fabric and art materials for her students. She went above and beyond for the Wizard of Oz production by purchasing and sewing costumes for her students that did not have the means to purchase their own. Along with costumes, she also spent money on extra supplies to make the set look outstanding.
“If Ms. Schwendeman won this gift card, I have no doubt that it would be used to purchase supplies – but more than that, it would be used to teach students so much more than basic academics – it would be used to teach them life skills, to nurture their creativity, and to bring out talents that these children never knew they had,” Kenee said.
Attorney Chris Davis and his wife started a program to help public school teachers get extra classroom supplies without having to spend their own money. In partnership with OfficeMax, the Davis Law Group School Supplies Gift Program gives a $100 OfficeMax gift card each week to a deserving Washington State Public school teacher and his/her class. Anyone can nominate a teacher for this program, teachers, and students, parents, and administrators.
