Early Injury Can Have Long Term Effects

One may think that because young children with brain injury usually recover their mental abilities quite rapidly, they may be less likely to be as seriously affected from a brain injury as an adult. However since children are still developing both physically and mentally, the reprocussions of those injuries may cause serious problems well after the physical scars have faded. According to Dr. Sandra Bond Chapman, a neurologist at the University of Texas, children who suffer brain injury are more likely to struggle with their ability to control emotions and have apppropiate behavior inhibited.

"These kids have incredible learning deficits even when the IQ returns to normal," said Dr Chapman. Because growth in the brain's frontal regions continues throughout young adulthood, early injury can damage the formation of the protective myelin insulation around neurons. In addition to inhibiting emotional control and understanding appropiate behavior, kids have trouble responding to subtle social cues and planning difficult tasks.

Dr. Chapman noted that 70% of children's brain injuries affect the frontal cortex.
