A 55-year-old Seattle-area man died Saturday after his inflatable raft capsized multiple times and he was unable to make it back to shore. Pacific County officials say they received an emergency call reporting someone in distress in the ocean near Benson Beach Saturday afternoon. Rescue teams found John Beaumier, a 55-year-old man from Woodinville, floating unconscious in the ocean upon arriving to the scene.
Officials determined that Beaumier and a friend, identified as 28-year-old Israel Anderson of Seattle, had entered the ocean from a small beach in the inflatable raft. Rough waters caused the raft to capsize several times and the men were able to get back on the raft the first few times, but eventually it began to deflate. Anderson was able to get back onto the raft and paddle himself to shore, but was separated from Beaumier.
Emergency crews got Beaumier to shore and began performing CPR on him, and he was taken to Ocean Beach Hospital in nearby Ilwaco where he was pronounced dead. The men were apparently camping at the state park for the weekend and both worked as nurses for Harborview Medical Center in Seattle.
