Another victim of a “proclaimed” plastic surgeon, Rohie Kah-Orukotan, died after liposuction. The man performing the surgery, Omar Brito, who received training in occupational health, was performing plastic surgery without training and proper equipment.
The spa in which the procedure took place, is where the patient receives manicures. The facility was not approved for office surgery of any kind. A lawsuit against the MedSpa was filed, with no response from the defendant regarding the suit.
The cause of
death in this liposuction procedure was also lidocain toxicity – an overdose.
"It's out of control," says Florida State Sen. Eleanor Sobel, who is vice chair of the Senate health regulations committee. "It's all about people doing a job they're not qualified to do."
Sobel plans to reintroduce a bill she proposed last year, which would regulate med-spas as medical clinics. This would subject them to inspection. During last year’s session, it was not a priority. She says that with the increase of death, it should be a priority this year.
"I don't think these general practitioners are skilled in anesthesia, which could be deadly," says Sobel. "The issue is not going away and needs to be resolved."
Based on lack of regulation, a doctor with a license to practice medicine is able to perform any procedure a patient requests. Therefore many doctors decide to go into areas with more money and limited support from insurance companies. Based on a survey by WebMd, plastic surgeons had a higher median income.
It is also important to distinguish the difference between residency-trained plastic surgeons and cosmetic surgeons. It is common for a cosmetic surgeon to be board certified – just not in plastic surgery.
