A bicycle accident involving a car took place Tuesday in the West Seattle area. 

The bicyclist was treated by medics and taken away in an ambulance.

According to Dana Vander Houwen of the Seattle Fire Department, the bicyclist sustained minor injuries after they were hit by a car at the intersection of 16th Avenue Southwest and Southwest Graham Street.

National Bike Accident statistics from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration say that in a 70 years period, in the United States alone, there were 47,000 bicyclists who died in traffic accidents.  Bicyclist deaths account for about two percent of all traffic fatalities and a bicyclist is fatally injured every six hours.
