Washington State Senate Bill Senate Bill 6345 Makes Holding a Cellphone While Driving a Primary Offense l Car Accident Lawyer In Bellevue

Washington State Senator Tracey Eide has read dozens of studies that link driving while using a cell phone and texting while driving.  She believes that it is the equivalent of driving drunk.   She has renewed her fight to further crack down on drivers who use handheld cellphones, promoting legislation that would allow officers to pull over a driver when they see it.

This issue has sparked a renewed debate in Olympia.  The question is: Is a new law targeted at cellphones needed to ensure public safety or do existing laws against distracted driving do the job?

Senate Bill 6345 would make holding a cellphone while driving a primary offense, reason enough for a police officer to stop a driver and, unless the phone is being used for an emergency, issue a $124 ticket.

The Seattle Times recent wrote a great article which explains the bill and the force behind it.  To read the article click on: Bill would make holding a cellphone while driving a primary offense in Wash.

Davis Law Group frequently represents people who have been injured in car accidents and truck collisions due to the negligence of a distracted driver.  We are very interested in this debate and the probable outcome.

Oregon just implemented its new hands-free law where it is illegal to drive and use a hand-held cell phone. Interestingly, hands-free cell devices might not eliminate the danger. The New York Times ran a series of articles on this subject last summer citing to federal research, which shows that the distraction is not the actual cell phone, but the conversation itself. Regardless, this is a good first step and I hope Washington passes the law.
