OLYMPIA, Wash. -- The Washington Traffic Safety Commission says the Washington State Patrol, county sheriff's offices and city police departments are coordinating an effort to reduce traffic fatalities. The effort, called X-52, for "extra patrols every week." The idea is that more patrols on our roads will help spot traffic violators and reduce instances of aggressive driving. The effort will also help police spot and arrest those drivers who may be impaired by drugs and/or alcohol.
The police agencies are using collision maps from the Transportation Department to target roads with histories for speeding and drunken driving. The commission is using $450,000 in federal funding for the emphasis patrols.
This is a great idea and one who't time has come. There are too many serious injury accidents and fatalities occurring on our roads. The good news is that traffic fatalities have actually reduced by about 15% in 2006 when compared with 2005. Hopefully this trend will continue.
