While we all worry about drunk driving a great deal, and the government is doing so much to prevent it, we should be very proud about what we have already accomplished as a nation. Even though it may not seem like it, we have come very far.
The United States actually has a very low fatality rate, in regards to drunk and sober drivers, and is a very safe nation to drive in. Throughout the decades, it has become even safer.
• There are now fewer than one and a half deaths (including the deaths of bicyclists, motorcyclists, pedestrians, auto drivers, and auto passengers) per one hundred million vehicle miles traveled.
•
Alcohol-related traffic fatalities have decreased from 60% of all traffic deaths in 1982 down to 39% in 2005.
• Alcohol-related traffic fatalities per vehicle miles driven has also dropped dramatically -- from 1.64 deaths per 100 million miles traveled in 1982 down to 0.56 in 2005.
• The proportion of alcohol-related crash fatalities has fallen 35% since 1982.
We can still do better
One major negative statistic - the number of traffic deaths not associated with alcohol, have actually jumped 53% during the same time. We are doing well with alcohol-related deaths, so what is going on with non alcohol-related deaths?
Our guess: technology.
Davis Law Group believes that
distracted driving has become a huge problem in our nation. Texting, internet, applications and more, have become a huge threat to drivers on the roadways.
Texting may be a bigger problem than drinking on our roadways. Who woulda thought…
