Unhitched Trailer Accident Kills Kitsap Man

The driver of an SUV was struck and killed by a runaway trailer that became unhitched from a truck.  The trailer was towing a fishing boat when it came unhitched from the pickup truck near the town of Suquamish.

According to the Kitsap County Sheriff department the impact of the collision caused the fishing boat that was on the trailer to unfasten and it too hit the SUV.

The driver of the SUV, who has not yet been identified, was pronounced dead at the scene.

In Washington State a Class 1 trailer (less than 1 ton maximum gross weight) requires a hitch ball at least 1 7/8 inches in diameter rated to withstand 3 tons of longitudinal tension and 1.5 tons of vertical tension.

For a Class 2 trailer in Washington (1 to 1.75 tons in weight) a hitch ball should be a minimum of 2 inches in diameter and rated for 5.5 tons of longitudinal tension and 2.5 tons of vertical tension.

Class 3 trailers in Washington (between 1.75 tons and 2.5 tons) require a 2-inch minimum ball and a rating to haul 7.5 tons longitudinal tension and 3.5 tons vertical tension.

The maximum length allowed for a trailer in Washington state is 53 feet.  According to Washington's attachment rules  safety chains must be strong enough to secure a load if the hitch connection fails.
