Two Women Injured When Semi Truck Attempts U-turn

Two women were injured today when their car struck a semi-truck which was trying to make a U-turn on Interstate 82 near Sunnyside. 

Mary Galaviz of Grandview, age 77, and Delores Smasne, age 58, also of Grandview were taken to Sunnyside Community Hospital.  Smasne was later transferred to Harborview Medical Center.  Galaviz was treated and released.

Apparently the truck driver, Ruperto Gomez was attempting a U-turn in a state Department of Transportation crossing.  He was driving a 1999 Kenworth.   Galaviz's 1992 Buick driven was passing the semi-tractor at the time, was struck by the truck, and totalled.  Officials say that the illegal U-turn caused the accident.
