During Seafair weekend, an unusual story was reported in which two boat operators were arrested for investigation of boating under the influence on the same boat. The tickets were given just four hours apart.
The first stop, around 1:30 p.m., took place after the boat drove into a restricted area. Joseph Dalrymple was
arrested for BUI.
Then around 5:40 p.m. the same boat was stopped again for going into another restricted. The boat’s operator, Thomas Hutchison was arrested for BUI.
Both men were booked into the King County Jail.
Boating Under the Influence Law in Washington State
Washington’s boating under the influence (BUI) law is governed by RCW 79A.60.040, which has many similarities and differences to
Washington’s driving under the influence law (DUI). Although drinking alcohol is not illegal on the boat, the operator is required to be under the legal limit.
