The Washington State Patrol has reported that traffic fatalities in Washington State have declined. Last year the State recorded 545 deaths from motor vehicle crashes, compared with 635 in 2006.
Trooper Mark Baker says, "That's huge for us." He says it means nearly 100 fewer times that a trooper had to sit down in someone's living room and tell a family a loved one had been lost. Baker says key factors in the decline include drunken driving crackdowns and tougher seat belt enforcement. He also notes there were no fatal accidents last year on the 100 miles of Interstate 90 from Ritzville to the Idaho state line.
This is great news. 90 fewer fatality accidents is a very big decrease. That's about a 14-15% reduction in deaths on our highways.
