The Toyota Camry is under investigation as the cause of death of two people and the injury of two others for auto defects. It has been reported that the Camry is subject matter to at least three recalls, including the accelerator and floor mat.
The driver and passenger of a 2008 Camry were killed by crashing into a rock wall. Evidence at the scene of the vehicle accident showed that the driver tried to stop the car as it exited an interstate highway. While exiting, the Camry failed to stop at a stop sign at the bottom of the exiting ramp, prior to hitting the rock wall.
Based on investigation by authorities, it is believed that either the length of the accelerator pad and/or floor mat were the cause of the
vehicle accident.
In September 2007, Toyota recalled 55,000 all-weather floor mats. After another crash in 2009, National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) reviewed the crash and determined that there was a need to redesign the accelerator pedal as well. The above case followed the already
recalled auto defects. The authorities are investigating whether these recalls were completed.
In 2010,
Toyota Motor Corp. was fined a total of $48.8 million in Civil Penalties.
