Goal: To reduce car accidents in Washington State
Today, drivers everywhere in Washington state will be driving in a more reserved way in hopes of preventing car accidents and collisions. In 2009, 492 lives were lost and thousands sustained serious injuries due to car accidents caused mainly by driver inattention. As Seattle Times columnist Jerry Large bluntly said, "We can do better."
The main focus of this year's Drive Nice Day is on teen drivers and the use of cell phones while driving, whether that be talking or texting. No matter what your age group, talking or texting while driving is not safe and Washington State government has stepped up and taken notice. On June 10th, talking without a hands free device such as a bluetooth and texting while driving will become a primary with ticket of $124 waiting for those who break this law. For young driver's especially, the temptation to talk or text while driving is one that has caused many lives to be cut short. With car accidents being the number one killer of teens between 15-19, there is debating that changes need to be made. It is our hope that Drive Nice Day will help be one the first steps to put an end to teen driving while texting.
No matter what your age group or whether you talk on the phone or text while you are driving, the way you drive makes a statement to other drivers about the type of person you are. If you have been sending a message that you may feel is incorrect, now is the time to change your message.
