Date: March 5, 2011, 03/05/2011 Location: Seattle, King County, Washington Type:Car accident, Motor vehicle collision, Pedestrian accident Outcome: Three injured Early Saturday morning around 1:30 a.m., a University of Washington patrol car was responding to a call near 7th Avenue Northeast and Interstate 5 when it was involved in collision that involved another vehicle and two pedestrians.
The patrol car, carrying two officers, was heading west on Northeast 45th Street when it collided with another vehicle at the intersection of 45th and University Way Northeast. The patrol car then veered southwest and struck two men that were standing that the corner of the intersection before crashing into a building in that same area.
The driver of the other vehicle and his passenger were uninjured and had no signs of alcohol or drug impairment.
The two pedestrians that were hit by the patrol car were taken to Harborview Medical Center by ambulance, with what Seattle police reported as "non-life-threatening" injuries.
The officer driving the patrol car was treated for minor injuries. The other passenger in the car was uninjured.
Seattle police is still investigating the crash. National Pedestrian Accident Statistics 4,409 pedestrians were killed in motor vehicle accidents in 2009. Pedestrian accident deaths account for 12 percent of motor vehicle accident deaths. People ages 70 and over are the highest at risk.

Although such accidents were the leading cause of death among individuals between 3 and 34 in 2006, 2008 saw a decrease in traffic fatalities from 1998. NHTSA statistics indicate that, on average, 102 people died each day in motor vehicle crashes in 2008, or one vehicle-related fatality every 14 minutes.
