Early Saturday morning around 1:30 a.m., a University of Washington patrol car was responding to a call near 7th Avenue Northeast and Interstate 5 when it was involved in collision that involved another vehicle and two pedestrians.

The patrol car, carrying two officers, was heading west on Northeast 45th Street when it collided with another vehicle at the intersection of 45th and University Way Northeast. The patrol car then veered southwest and struck two men that were standing that the corner of the intersection before crashing into a building in that same area.

The driver of the other vehicle and his passenger were uninjured and had no signs of alcohol or drug impairment.

The two pedestrians that were hit by the patrol car were taken to Harborview Medical Center by ambulance, with what Seattle police reported as "non-life-threatening" injuries.

The officer driving the patrol car was treated for minor injuries. The other passenger in the car was uninjured.

Seattle police is still investigating the crash.

NHTSA statistics indicate that, on average, 102 people died each day in motor vehicle crashes in 2008, or one vehicle-related fatality every 14 minutes.
