Three people were killed and one was injured in a collision on Whidbey Island early Saturday morning.

An 18-year-old female was driving southbound on Wilkinson Road near Meander Lane when she passed another vehicle, lost control, left the roadway, and struck a tree. Her car then burst into flames.

The driver was pulled from the vehicle by witnesses but her three passengers, a 22-year-old male, a 20-year-old male, and 19-year-old male were all killed. She was taken to Whidbey General Hospital for treatment of her injuries and later booked into Island County jail.

According to authorities, she faces charges of vehicular homicide, with bail set at $150,000.

When the death of any person ensues within three years as a proximate result of injury proximately caused by the driving of any vehicle by any person, the driver is guilty of vehicular homicide if the driver was operating a motor vehicle:

(a) While under the influence of intoxicating liquor or any drug,

(b) In a reckless manner; or

One hundred eighty-two (182) of those accidents involved a drunk driver whose blood alcohol concentration (BAC) was 0.08 or higher. In Washington State, 34% of all fatal motor vehicle crashes involve a driver that was under the influence of alcohol.

Drunk driving is one of the leading causes of motor vehicle collisions. According to Mothers Against Drunk Driving, 16,694 people were killed in alcohol-related crashes in the United States in 2004. This figure represents 39% of all traffic incident deaths. In fact, more than 500,000 Americans are injured annually in drunken driving crashes.
