The Basics of Bicycling

bicycle safety

Be a safe cyclist and learn the basics:

First thing to know: Focus on the type of bike you are looking for. If you plan to bike on smooth pavements for long distances, you want a road bike. If you plan to mountain bike, you should look for a bike with wide tires, a strong frame and flat handlebars. If you are looking to ride on bike trails, look for a hybrid or comfort bike.

Second thing to know: Get fitted so that you buy the right bike for your size. If you have the correct bike, but the seat and handle bars are not placed correctly, you are putting yourself at risk for a bicycle accident. We recommend going to a bike shop in order to get properly fit.

Third thing to know: Make sure you buy the correct gear. The number one thing you need is a helmet. A helmet will protect you from severe injuries if you get into a bike accident. You need to buy a helmet that fits your head properly as well. A good tip to fitting a helmet is to measure your forehead about one inch above your eyebrows. Size ranges are usually found on the helmets. The helmet should fit tight and secure and not tilt up or down. Replace your helmet if it has been in an accident. Another piece of equipment you need is front and rear lights. This helps you to be visible to others, which is very important. You will also be able to see the roadway ahead of you much better.

Fourth thing to know:
Wear bright and reflective clothing. This also increases your visibility to others. Wear comfortable shoes that fit tightly and have no long laces or anything that could get caught in the bike structure. We also recommend wearing bicycle gloves to protect your hands (and if you are in an acciden
t it will protect your hands from getting scraped up). Sunglasses are also very important to protect your eyes from the sun and to prevent glare.

Fifth thing to know:
You should purchase a mirror for your bike so that you can see approaching cyclists, and more importantly, motorists. Practice checking your blind spots too so that when you look you do not swerve and bring your bike with you.

Follow these steps and you should be ready to ride!
