A new study has shown that drivers who text while driving are six times more likely to cause an accident from inattention than drivers who don't text and drive.
A new study was conducted using simulator vehicles. The identical traffic patterns in the simulator study found that the risk of texting while driving is significantly higher than when drivers do other distracting things like talking on the phone or eating while driving.
University of Utah researchers found that those who use cell phones are four times more likely to cause an accident.
According to researcher Frank Drew, drivers who text behind the wheel have an almost 20 percent slower reaction to brake lights and are more likely to drift into other lanes.
The study, which was published in the journal Human Factors, evaluated college-age drivers who consider themselves "experienced text messagers."
Some lawmakers in the United States have began pushing to ban drivers from using text messaging while driving in all 50 states, based on the results from earlier studies that showed similar results.
