Study Shows Adults Text and Drive More than Teens

A new study shows that adults are just as like as teenagers to be guilty of texting while driving. Who knew?

A study release by The Pew Research Center’s Internet and American Life Project says both of the age groups are equally as likely to be breaking this law.

The study also shows that adults are MORE likely to be chatting on their phones.

Forty-seven percent of adults who text, said that they send or read texts while driving. And 24 percent of 16-year-olds and 17-year-olds said that they were guilty of texting while driving.

The study also uncovered that adults are more likely to talk their cell phones while driving, in fact, 75 percent of adults! Fifty-two percent of teenagers talked on their phones.

A lead author of the study Mary Madden said that some of the heat should be taken off the teens, onto the irresponsible adults.

"I think all of us can identify with that temptation to stay connected during those idle moments in the car. ... The reality is, even if the car isn't moving, a delayed response to a green light or at a stop sign can still result in an accident," she said.

A flaw in the study did not account for hands-free devices, which are not illegal. Yet Madden still says that having a conversation, through any device, is distracting.

The study consisted of a telephone interview with 2,252 adults.

Do you think this survey is accurate of teenagers versus adults, texting while driving?
