On Super Bowl Sunday, nearly three-dozen cops will form a "Zero Target Team" which will be patrolling areas where drunk driving accidents, arrests, and fatalities have occurred.
The State Patrol, local police and sheriff's deputies in Pierce, King and Snohomish counties will be out in force to track down people who make the choice to drive drunk.
"Fans don't let fans drive drunk" has been adopted as the new slogan and supported by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, MADD (Mothers Against Drunk Driving), and the NFL.
The Super Bowl is about having a good time supporting football so the teams are asking everyone to look out for one another. State Patrol Chief John R. Batiste says "Baseball has the designated hitter. On Super Bowl Sunday we need designated drivers to make sure their fellow fans get home safely."
A state patrol aircraft outfitted in forward looking infrared technology will assist troopers on the ground. The goal being that any impaired drivers who are reported by callers will be found much quicker with the two teams collaborating.
Troopers arrested 19 impaired drivers in King, Pierce and Snohomish counties last year in the post-game hours.
Under state law, drivers are allowed to use their cell phones if it's an emergency and authorities are urging people to call and report impaired drivers anytime surrounding the Super Bowl.
